Annotation
The polysemy of medical terminology, characterized by the existence of multiple
meanings for a single term, poses significant challenges in healthcare communication.
This article explores the nuances of polysemy in the context of medical language,
emphasizing its impact on various stakeholders, including healthcare professionals,
patients, and researchers. Through a comprehensive examination of polysemous terms
in medicine and real-world examples, we delve into the potential misinterpretations
and communication barriers that may arise. The evolution of medical terminology and
efforts to standardize language are discussed to highlight the dynamic nature of this
linguistic landscape. By examining the challenges posed by polysemy, this article aims
to underscore the importance of clarity and precision in medical communication.
Future considerations and strategies for mitigating the impact of polysemy in
healthcare language are also presented, contributing to ongoing discussions on
enhancing effective communication in the medical field.
