Abstract

Modal verbs play a vital role in shaping discourse in modern English, serving as linguistic markers that convey nuances of meaning and attitudes in various communicative contexts. This article conducts a discourse analysis of modal verbs in contemporary English to elucidate the patterns and functions of these versatile language components. By examining the usage of modal verbs in diverse types of discourse, including academic, informal, and professional settings, this study aims to uncover how modal verbs contribute to the conveyance of meaning, speaker stance, and communicative strategies in modern English communication.
